Nicholas Rescher 45394
Epistemetrics
2006. Pp: 112. Epistemetrics is not as yet a scholarly discipline. With regard to scientific information there is the discipline of scientometrics, represented by a journal of that very name. Science, however, does not have a monopoly on knowledge. It is one of our most important cognitive resources, it is not our only one. While scientometrics is a centerpiece of epistemetrics, it is not the whole of it. Nicholas Rescher's endeavor to quantify knowledge is not only of interest in itself, but is also instructive in bringing into sharper relief the nature of and the explanatory rationale for the limits that unavoidably confront our efforts to advance the frontiers of knowledge. In particular, his book demonstrates the limitations of human knowledge and will be of great value to scholars working in this area. ISBN: 9780521861205. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Nicholas Rescher 45394
Nature and Understanding. The Metaphysics and Method of Science
Clarendon Press, 2000. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 186. Nature and Understanding explores the prospect of looking from a scientific point of view at such central ideas of traditional metaphysics as the simplicity of nature, its comprehensibility, or its systematic integrity. Rescher seeks to describe - in a way accessible to philosophers and nonphilosophers alike - the metaphysical situation that characterizes the process of inquiry in natural science. His principal aim is to see what light can be shed on reality by examining the modus operandi of natural science itself, focusing as much on its findings as on its conceptual and methodological presuppositions. This is the culmination of many years of penetrating work in this area of philosophy by one of its most eminent exponents. It is the definitive presentation of some of Rescher's key ideas. Nicholas Rescher 45394
Rationality
Clarendon Press, 1988. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 234. Contending that only a normative theory of rationality can be adequate to the complexities of the subject, this book explains and defends the view that rationality consists of the intelligent pursuit of appropriate objectives. Rescher considers the mechanics, rationale, and rewards of reason, and argues that social scientists who want to present a theory of rationality while avoiding the vexing complexities of normative deliberations must amend their perspective of the rational enterprise. Nicholas Rescher 45394
Sensible Decisions. Issues of Rational Decision in Personal Choice and Public Policy
Rowman & Littlefield, 2003. Hardcover. Pp: 147. In personal and public affairs alike we constantly confront the need for deciding among available alternatives. Philosophers have long been preoccupied with the lines of thought and principles of deliberation in resolving such choices rationally. Sensible Decisions synthesizes Nicholas Rescher's contribution to this discussion over the years. This book is concerned with the procedural constraints that rationality imposes on our choices in the social and technological reality in which we operate. Rescher's prime aim is to illuminate some of the theoretical complications and perplexities that characterize rational procedure in matters of decision making at the public policy level. Nicholas Rescher 45394
A System of Pragmatic Idealism: Volume 3 - Metaphilosophical Inquiries
Princeton University Press, 1994. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 269. This is the third and final volume that summarizes the life's work of the philosopher Nicholas Rescher. Rescher's books and articles, which address almost every major philosophical topic, reflect a unified approach: the combination of pragmatism and idealism characteristic of his thinking throughout his career. In combining leading ideas of European continental idealism and American pragmatism in a new way, Rescher has created an integrated philosophical position in which the central concepts of these two traditions become a coherent totality. The initial volume in the series was dedicated to epistemology, the philosophy of science, and the philosophy of nature, while the second dealt with issues of value theory, ethics and practical philosophy. This volume examines the nature of philosophical inquiry itself, seeking to affirm the classical conception of philosophy as a significant problem-solving enterprise that draws on the whole range of human experience in an attempt to resolve the big questions. Conditionals
Cambridge: The MIT Press, 2007. Hardcover Dustjacket. 246 pp. (Bradford Books). Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good. - A unified treatment of conditionals based on epistemological principles rather than the semantical principles in vogue over recent decades. This book by distinguished philosopher Nicholas Rescher seeks to clarify the idea of what a conditional says by elucidating the information that is normally transmitted by its utterance. The result is a unified treatment of conditionals based on epistemological principles rather than the semantical principles in vogue over recent decades. This approach, argues Rescher, makes it easier to understand how conditionals actually function in our thought and discourse. In its concern with what language theorists call pragmatics-the study of the norms and principles governing our use of language in conveying information- Conditionals steps beyond the limits of logic as traditionally understood and moves into the realm claimed by theorists of artificial intelligence as they try to simulate our actual information-processing practices. The book's treatment of counterfactuals essentially revives an epistemological approach proposed by F. P. Ramsey in the 1920s and developed by Rescher himself in the 1960s but since overshadowed by the now-dominant possible-worlds approach. Rescher argues that the increasingly evident liabilities of the possible-worlds strategy make a reappraisal of the older style of analysis both timely and desirable. As the book makes clear, an epistemological approach demonstrates that counterfactual reasoning, unlike inductive inference, is not a matter of abstract reasoning alone but one of good judgment and common sense.
